Learning How to Trust Your Creative Voice

Creating content and sharing it with the world is not easy. So many things can cloud the process – from the work others are doing to the fear of criticism, industry norms or “rules”, knowledge gaps, limited self-assurance and more.

Know Your Worth

As difficult as it can be to obtain and maintain, confidence is key to building a sustainable career. You have to believe in what you do and that the way you do it adds value to your community, the industry and the world.

You might be wondering: what does it look like to trust my process, my vision and how do I create film and television projects that share my perspective on life? The first step is to realize that your point of view matters. The next step is to hone and trust in your voice.

Know Your Self

In this video, the Issa Rae Presents team shares when they learned to trust their voice, the importance of knowing your voice and knowing when to trust your ability.

Do you have a clear voice in your projects? If so, how do you make sure you lean into it when creating, instead of allowing outside influences to shape and mold what you make?

With her own unique flare and infectious sense of humor, Rae first garnered attention for her award-winning web series and the accompanying New York Times best-seller, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.” She created and stars in the hit HBO show, Insecure, for which she has received multiple Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominations. Rae made her film debut in the acclaimed drama, “The Hate U Give.” This year, she starred in Netflix’s “The Lovebirds,” a romantic comedy and the HBO political-satire drama, “Coastal Elites.”
